The San Francisco 49ers and quarterback Brock Purdy appear to be at an impasse in their contract discussions. While Purdy wants a deal similar to the one Dak Prescott got from the Dallas Cowboys, John Lynch and the 49ers do not seem inclined to give it to him.
Purdy became an instant star when he took over the starting job in San Francisco. However, there are still major questions about just how good he really can be.
During the 2024 NFL season, the 49ers struggled. Purdy was unable to power them to wins without Christian McCaffrey and Brandon Aiyuk on the field. That has drawn concern from the fans in San Francisco and possibly from the team itself.
While there is still a chance the two sides can come together on an agreement, trade rumors have started creeping in.
Former NFL quarterback and current analyst Chris Simmons recently opened up about Purdy. He provided a highly critical take about the young quarterback.
“Nobody looks at Brock Purdy as a top-10 quarterback in football. Nobody," Simms said. "Yeah with Shanahan as his OC and the 49er all star team around him the last few years, yeah he can look pretty good. He can look top-10ish. But we just saw last year when the 49er all star team got injured, they went 6 and 11 and we’re talking about paying him over 50 million dollars a year?… It’s a tough situation and I would not want to see them pay over 45 million dollars a year if I was running the team.”
Last season, Purdy completed 65.9% of his pass attempts for 3,864 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions in the 15 games he played. He also picked up 323 yards and five touchdowns on the ground.

His numbers were solid, but the team suffered through a 6-11 season and missed the playoffs.
At 25 years old, risking him leaving town is a big gamble. Overpaying him would be an even bigger gamble.
Simms clearly doesn't buy into the major hype that Purdy received. The 49ers will have to decide just how aggressive they want to be.
