Ex-Steelers WR Has Major Doubts about Russell Wilson and Justin Fields

Former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Plaxico Burress thinks it will be back to the drawing board for the Steelers at the quarterback position in 2025.

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Russell Wilson Justin Fields

“I just don’t know what the Steelers are gonna do moving forward from a franchise quarterbacking standpoint,” Burress said on the the Craig Carton Show. “I really think that they are looking for a successor after this season. I just don’t see either Russell Wilson or Justin Fields being a future quarterback for the Steelers.”

Burress is right that the Steelers franchise quarterback is probably not on the roster right now. Wilson is just a stop-gap QB. Maybe Fields emerges into something, but there are some valid concerns with his game.

Craig Carton said earlier this offseason that Fields can’t carry Wilson’s jock strap as an NFL quarterback.

“[Russell Wilson] is basically there for free because Denver is paying him all the money, and he is the veteran quarterback with success on his resume. Justin Fields can’t carry his jock strap right now as an NFL quarterback. He’s younger, he’s faster, he’s more athletic, yes, yes, yes, but he’s not as good of a quarterback as Russell Wilson,” Carton said.

Trevor Sikkema of Pro Football Focus recently named one offensive player to watch for all 32 NFL teams in the 2025 NFL Draft. For the Steelers, Sikkema thinks Georgia quarterback Carson Beck could be on their radar next year.

“Russell Wilson’s and Justin Fields‘ contracts expire after the 2024 season, and while the Steelers will be hoping one shows enough to secure the long-term starting quarterback job, that would be a surprise,” Sikkema wrote.

“Beck was one of the more impressive quarterbacks in college football by the end of 2023. His arm talent, ball placement and pocket presence give him NFL starter potential. He will enter the year as many analysts’ QB1.”

Many consider Beck as a top 5 draft pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, so unless the Steelers completely collapse this season, he most likely will be out of their range. A trade-up could occur, though.

Beck, Shedeur Sanders, Garrett Nussmeier, and Jalen Milroe were all selected in the top 10 in the latest 33rd Team’s mock draft. The 33rd Team had the Steelers landing highly touted Colorado cornerback Travis Hunter at 14th overall.
