Expect the San Francisco 49ers to Extend Jauan Jennings Soon

The San Francisco 49ers were having effectively a drama-free offseason.

Jauan Jennings 49ers

Until, on Monday June 4, 2025, ESPN insider Adam Schefter reported that wide receiver Jauan Jennings approached the 49ers and told them he wants a new deal or to be traded.

Jennings is set to open the 49ers season as their #1 wide receiver, so this is a troubling development for San Francisco fans.

But, Schefter reported just one day later that although multiple teams reached out to the 49ers about Jennings, the 49ers have no interest in trading him.

Jennings wants a deal done before the 49ers veterans are scheduled to report to training camp in one week on Tuesday July 22, 2025. He will likely put more pressure on the 49ers to trade him if a deal is not done by then.

Given those two facts, 49ers fans should expect Jennings to get a new contract very soon.

How Much Could Jennings Be Looking For?

As of right now, Jauan Jennings is set to make $7.5 million in the final year of his 2-year, $15.3 million contract.

49ers analysts are estimating that Jennings wants a contract in the range of $15-$17.5 million, similar to what Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Cooper Kupp and Cleveland Browns wide receiver Jerry Jeudy currently make.

The 49ers underwent a huge roster crunch this offseason because of financial constraints. Several key players departed including Dre Greenlaw and Talanoa Hufanga.

However, the 49ers also extended Brock Purdy, George Kittle and Fred Warner this offseason. The 49ers also extended WR Brandon Aiyuk last offseason after a similar contract dispute that Jennings is having now.

It is possible that the 49ers don’t extend Jennings at all and just keep him on his current contract. Jennings isn’t expected to hold out for a new contract. But, keeping him on his current contract would likely ruin his relationship with the 49ers and they’d lose him next offseason for nothing.

If the 49ers change their mind about Jennings, a trade is far more likely than them doing nothing. They don’t want to lose Jennings without at least getting a late-round draft pick in return.

But if Schefter’s reporting is indeed accurate, that the 49ers don’t want to trade Jennings, then an extension is the clear outcome that 49ers fans should expect.

Why the 49ers Need to Extend Jennings

To put it plainly, Jennings is not just the 49ers’ best receiver heading into 2025. He is their only proven, healthy one.

Deebo Samuel was traded to the Washington Commanders. Aiyuk is injured. Ricky Pearsall, Jacob Cowing and Jordan Watkins are still young and unproven. Demarcus Robinson may be facing league discipline for a DUI charge.

Jennings, on the other hand, is coming off his best NFL season. He had career highs in catches with 77, yards with 975, and touchdowns with 6 in 2024.

Jennings is just a little over a year removed from nearly winning Super Bowl MVP in Super Bowl LXIII. Had the 49ers held on to beat the Kansas City Chiefs in that game, MVP honors would have almost certainly gone to Jennings.

So Jennings is a reliable, clutch player in a room full of question marks.

What do you think, 49ers fans? Will the 49ers extend Jauan Jennings? When should fans expect an extension to be signed?
