Failed Red Sox trade deadline acquisition agrees to sign with NL team

Lucas Sims will get another opportunity to try to rebound from an ugly 2024 that ended with the Boston Red Sox after he agreed to sign with the Washington Nationals, sources told MassLive’s Chris Cotillo on Tuesday. It’s a one-year, $3 million contract.

The Red Sox acquired Sims from the Cincinnati Reds at last year’s trade deadline for minor league pitcher Ovis Portes in hopes he’d bolster the bullpen as Boston tried to make a run down the stretch.

But it didn’t work out.

In August 2024, Sims was placed on the 15-day injured list with a lat strain. Sims posted a 6.43 ERA in 15 appearances and allowed 10 earned runs in 14 innings pitched. Walks had been an issue for the pitcher throughout his career and that continued with the Red Sox when he amassed 10 walks.

Sims will now join a Nationals bullpen that struggled in 2024 with a 4.14 ERA.
