Dallas Cowboys backup quarterback Cooper Rush took the field for his first start of the season last Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles. He filled in for Dak Prescott, who’s out for the year after a season-ending hamstring injury suffered against the Atlanta Falcons.
Unfortunately for Rush and the Cowboys, things didn’t go well. They fell 34-6, with Rush's offense struggling. He finished the game, completing just 13-of-23 passes for 45 yards.
In the fourth quarter, head coach Mike McCarthy gave third-string quarterback Trey Lance a shot to try to revive the offense. Lance, the former No. 3 overall pick in 2021, went 4-for-6 for 21 yards but looked a little more efficient. In four seasons in the NFL, he's appeared in just nine games.
Rush participated fully in practice on Thursday, but he showed up on the injury report with a neck issue. According to Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, the injury stems from the team's first fumble of Sunday's game.
NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported the news, and fans quickly took to social media, calling for Lance to start in Monday’s matchup against the Houston Texans.
Even though McCarthy already named Rush the starter, fans are eager to see anyone lead the offense.
"Why not Start Lance Why not Start Lance Why not Start Lance Why not Start Lance Why not Start Lance Why not Start Lance Why not Start Lance Why not Start Lance," one fan wrote.
"GIVE US LANCE," another said.
"TREY LANCE SEASON," added a fan.
"Trey Lance getting reps yea," another wrote.
"Trey lance szn," one said.
"Just start Lance, why not???" another added.
The all-Texas showdown on Monday night will air on ESPN at 8:15 p.m. ET. According to ESPN BET, the Texans are currently a 7.5-point road favorite.
