Cornerback Greg Newsome II is a surprise addition as Cleveland prepares for the start of training camp.

The Cleveland Browns are heading to The Greenbrier resort in West Virginia on Thursday for the start of training camp.

But before everyone heads out of town, the club took care of some injury-related business by placing seven players on the available training camp injury lists - including one unexpected player in cornerback Greg Newsome II.

Newsome is dealing with a hamstring injury, according to the team, and was placed on the active/non-football injury list along with running back Nyheim Hines.

The club placed five players on the active/physically unable to perform (PUP) list: running back Nick Chubb, who is still recovering from two knee surgeries; safety D’Anthony Bell, who has a shin injury; defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson with a knee injury; and offensive tackles Jack Conklin and Jedrick Wills Jr., both still recovering from their season-ending knee injuries in 2023.

None of those five come as a real surprise, except maybe Tomlinson, as Chubb, Wills, Conklin, and Hines were non-participants during on-field activities during the minicamp in June.

The news has remained positive throughout the offseason regarding the recovery of Chubb, Wills, and Conklin, and they should all be back at some point in the coming weeks (in the case of Wills and Conklin) or the coming months (in the case of Chubb).

Hopefully the same can be said of Newsome, who was able to participate in the team’s mandatory minicamp. Although a hamstring injury is not as severe as what some of the other players are dealing with, it can often take longer than fans realize for a player to get back on the field. Fortunately, there is plenty of time for Newsome to get ready before the games start to count in the standings.

All seven players count toward the 90-man roster limit and are eligible to be activated at any time during training camp once they pass their physicals.
