Former 800-Yard Receiver Trying Out at Saints Rookie Minicamp

The New Orleans Saints announced their 16 tryouts for rookie minicamp, and one of the guys is a well known, former 800-yard receiver with the Cleveland Browns.

Of the 16 players who will be trying out at the Saints' rookie minicamp, the most notable by far is Donovan Peoples-Jones. The former Brown and Lion is 6-foot-2 and would give the Saints some much needed help at receiver.

Peoples-Jones is entering his sixth year in the NFL. He began his career with the Browns before joining the Detroit Lions for part of the 2023 season. He didn't play in 2024, but is looking to make a comeback in 2025.

During his first four seasons (2020-2023), Peoples-Jones caught 122 passes for 1,895 yards and eight touchdowns. He finished second on the team in receiving in 2022 with 839 yards, which trailed only Amari Cooper, who finished with 1,160.

The Saints are in need of a big bodied wide receiver. They have Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed, who are both great, but only 6-feet tall. Peoples-Jones is a bit taller (6-foot-2) and a bit heavier (205-pounds), so if he can perform well in the try out, a signing should be imminent.

There have also been rumors about the Saints potentially signing Kennan Allen, the longtime Los Angeles Charger turned Chicago Bear this past year. He's 33, but he was still productive in Chicago last year, going for over 700 yards receiving with Caleb Williams throwing him the ball.

It's clear the Saints need a wideout, it's just a matter of how much they're willing to spend. Peoples-Jones would certainly be cheaper than Allen, but can he really produce as much as Allen could? Probably not.

We'll see what happens, but it looks like they're vetting their options.
