The Kansas City Chiefs could use some help at the safety position after losing Justin Reid this offseason. One of the best names available at the position is Justin Simmons, a man who is all too familiar with the Chiefs.
Simmons has been quite good against Patrick Mahomes, intercepting the three-time Super Bowl winning quarterback six times. When asked if he'd be interested in joining Mahomes' Chiefs, Simmons didn't hold back on why he'd rather not.
“This is where my heart is torn,” Simmons told Kay Adams on Up & Adams. “I've always been so publicly against Kansas City, and it's because they're a really good team. It's not like a true, ‘Hey, I just I want to beat them.’ It's just ingrained in me to beat them.”
Justin Simmons explains why he doesn't want to join Chiefs
While Simmons has had personal success against Mahomes, his teams haven't fared well against the Chiefs since Mahomes took over as the starting quarterback. The long-time Bronco and then short-term Falcon has just one win against the Chiefs so the frustration towards them makes perfect sense.
Simmons pointed to Josh Jacobs' attitude toward the Chiefs when he was a free agent, not wanting to sign with Kansas City because he was used to playing against them and wanted to beat them.
“Honestly, I feel the exact same way. And so, am I shutting that door? Am I closing it? No. But I just want to be the team that beats them.”
While Simmons did say he's not for sure ruling out signing with them, it definitely sounds like he'd rather be on a team that has a chance to compete against the Chiefs. Considering how long Simmons played in Denver, it makes sense that he'd dislike K.C., especially considering how badly the Chiefs beat up on the Broncos during Simmons' time there.
As mentioned above, Simmons' Broncos only beat the Chiefs once and that came during the back half of the 2023 season when Mahomes wasn't feeling well. Simmons was then a Denver cap casualty last offseason and signed a one-year deal with Atlanta where he had to face the Chiefs again. He intercepted Mahomes once in that game but the Falcons ultimately lost.
While Simmons would give the Chiefs a nice veteran option to have in their secondary, it doesn't sound like fans should get their hopes up about a potential truce happening.
