A few years ago, the Kansas City Chiefs did not have the secondary they do today, which is widely considered to be one of the best in the league. They didn't have nearly the defense they do now, either. But that just goes to show how well they have drafted, developed, and signed free agents.
The Chiefs were trotting guys out like Charvarius Ward, Rashad Fenton, and Mike Hughes. No shots at those guys, but that was a mediocre unit compared to the guys the Chiefs have now and had last season. Ward was great at times, Fenton had his moments, and even Mike Hughes won defensive player of the week once.
However, the team dynamics shifted. The Chiefs allowed Ward to leave in free agency, and he found success with the San Francisco 49ers. His departure, along with other player movements, has undoubtedly influenced the team's defensive strategy.
"It's better over here. It's better over here in every way possible," Ward told the media when asked how his time was in Kansas City.
Now, granted, the media sessions were crazy for the Super Bowl, so maybe he was just talking. Who knows, really? But he said that, and it really doesn't make sense. The Chiefs have won two Super Bowls without him since.
Does Ward just like losing?
On Monday, he went on the Up and Adams show and talked to Kay Adams about his comments. After losing to the Chiefs in the Super Bowl, it would appear he has changed his mind on his former team and city just a bit.
"Look, I said that, but I love Kansas City," Ward said. "I had a hell of a time there, to the training staff, the people in the lunch room, the janitors, all of the coaching staff, the players; I made a whole lot of friendships out there. I just said that because that was the first question they asked me when I got on the podium... Kansas City was a great spot for me; I loved it there."
Ward was good in Kansas City, but there is really no taking back what he said. He said it, and he meant it, or he wouldn't have added the last part "in every single way."
But I'm sure Chiefs fans will appreciate his apology.
