Raheem Mostert suggested the 49ers want him back this offseason, but is there any truth to the rumor?
The San Francisco 49ers helped turn running back Raheem Mostert into a household name, and there's no question he carved out a reputation for his efforts during the Niners' legendary Super Bowl run in January of 2020, particularly with that epic performance in the NFC title game against the Green Bay Packers.
That was years ago, though. And while Mostert went on to have a productive tenure after he left San Francisco in 2022 and signed with the Miami Dolphins, his immediate future is very much in doubt.
Albeit for very different circumstances, both the 49ers and Dolphins have engineered some tough offseason decisions, including roster cuts and cap casualties on the eve of the league new year.
Mostert was one of them.
Officially a free agent, the one-time Pro Bowler who led the league with 18 rushing touchdowns in 2023 is seeking a new employer.
The Niners are interested, per a source.
That source is Mostert.
Speaking on NFL Network, Mostert revealed he had been in touch with San Francisco about a potential reunion (transcribed by Grant Cohn of Sports Illustrated):
"It would definitely be a great one-two punch. I talked to [Christian McCaffrey], one of my guys. We've chatted quite, quite some time over the years, and honestly, the Niners have been in discussion. I could just say that we've heard from them, and trying to work some stuff out, obviously. But you never know. You can go one direction and then flip within an hour, to another direction. But everything's on the table for me right now."
Now, it doesn't sound as if anything is imminent. And it could merely be a case where Mostert's agent reached out to the 49ers to see if there's any interest.
Should there be, though?
Mostert will turn 33 years old this spring, ancient for a running back. While the bulk of his rushing efforts didn't come until later in his career, as he was primarily a special teams ace early on, the tailback dealt with injuries last season and averaged a career-worst 3.3 yards per carry.
While having a veteran presence in the locker room is always a bonus, especially in light of the Niners losing so many big names at the outset of the NFL new year, McCaffrey already serves that purpose.
And it'd make much more sense for San Francisco to grab a rookie rusher in April's draft to support McCaffrey, Isaac Guerendo and Jordan Mason than to bring Mostert back.
Talk is talk, though.
