A former University of Georgia linebacker is taking on a new role this fall. Jarvis Jones, who started his college career at USC before finishing with three seasons at Georgia, is now the head football coach at George W. Carver High School in Columbus, Georgia, his alma mater.
As a student-athlete at Carver, Jones earned national recognition. He was selected to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl and also earned all-state honors in basketball, showcasing his athletic versatility.
The hiring was first reported by On3 Sports Recruits:
"Former Georgia All-American LB Jarvis Jones has been hired as the head coach at Carver (Ga.) High, his alma mater."
During his college career at Georgia, Jones racked up accolades. He won the Jack Lambert Trophy in 2012, was a two-time All-American and earned SEC Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2012.
Jones was selected 17th overall by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2013 NFL Draft. He appeared in 50 regular-season games for the Steelers and made the playoffs in each of his final three seasons with the team.
His NFL career ended in 2017. The Arizona Cardinals had signed him earlier that year, but Jones was released with an injury settlement before the season began.
Carver High is one of Georgia’s top high school football programs. The team won its first state title in 2007 and claimed another championship last season.
Jones takes over for Pierre Coffey, who led Carver to a 33-8 record over three seasons before stepping down. Carver High has produced several standout football players over the years, including Brentson Buckner, Isaiah Crowell, Wallace Davis, Roderick Hood, Chris Hubbard, Dell McGee, Jasper Sanks and Gabe Wright.
