Former Lightning Defender Could Find New Home Soon

This former Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman has the potential to get signed in the near future.

Kevin Shattenkirk returns to New York with 'no regrets' after buyout

At this point in the offseason, most of the players who became free agents on July 1 have been signed. While this is true, it does not mean that the free-agent market is completely empty of interesting players.

One specific free agent who is still available in the final days of August is former Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk. However, given the fact that Shattenkirk can still produce solid offense from the point, he absolutely has the potential to land a contract or professional tryout (PTO) agreement before training camp is here.

We have confirmation that at least one team has Shattenkirk on their radar. NHL insider Frank Seravalli recently reported that the Edmonton Oilers are considering Shattenkirk, along with Justin Schultz and Tyson Barrie. Given Edmonton's current situation on the right side of their defense, it is understandable that they have their eye on Shattenkirk.

However, besides the Oilers, Shattenkirk could also generate interest from other teams. This past season, the 35-year-old demonstrated with the Boston Bruins that he can still work in a depth role, posting six goals and 24 points in 61 games. In addition, his plethora of experience could make him an appealing target for teams looking for more veteran leadership, as his 952 career games demonstrate.

It will be very interesting to see if Shattenkirk can find a new home. Teams needing more offense from their blueline could give the one-time Stanley Cup champion a shot. When looking at Tampa Bay's current defense, they could make sense as a potential landing spot for the veteran.
