The Detroit Lions watched the Philadelphia Eagles rip the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 in the Super Bowl, and a big reason why how their defensive line dominated.
Patrick Mahomes was under constant duress, taking six sacks with two interceptions. The way the Eagles played was how the Lions' defense hoped to impact games in 2024 prior to a rash of injuries.
Former Lions offensive lineman and current radio sideline analyst T.J. Lang hopes the team's brass paid attention to the Super Bowl and called for the pursuit of Myles Garrett.
There are other ways to beef up Detroit's defensive line. The Lions could sign Josh Sweat of the Eagles in free agency. They've been named a good fit for Khalil Mack, and the draft offers young talents that can be developed. Lang's point is correct, though. Nobody else offers the Lions a shot at immediate dominance quite like Garrett.
Analyst believes Detroit Lions are top NFC fit for Myles Garrett
The path to Detroit having a similar defensive line to Philadelphia's might not be far given Garrett's presence on the market and many believe the Lions are a good fit. John Middlekauff joined "The Colin Cowherd Podcast" and noted Detroit is an NFC team to watch.
"To me, it's a lot of NFC teams. (Green Bay) Packers. Washington (Commanders). I think the (Detroit) Lions have to sniff around a lot. (San Francisco) 49ers in theory, but I just think that they got some other needs in the sense of can they use their draft picks when they're paying all these other players? To me Washington, I think you think long and hard, but if you got to give two ones, a two and a player -- he's going to get a historic haul even at 29 years old. I think it's difficult when you're just in year one when you still need some of these picks. Ideally, you'd like to just buy players on the open market, but you're having a long conversation. I think the quarterback showed so much this year you'd have to highly entertain it."
The Lions are arguably the best fit for Garrett because they are in more in their win-now window than the Commanders. The 49ers could be past their window. Garrett might not fit other rivals quite as well as he fits Detroit's timeline. If the Lions were paying attention as Lang hopes, they could find themselves in position to make the deal.
