Since becoming the Green Bay Packers head coach in 2019, Matt LaFleur has had the opportunity to work alongside many talented players. In each of his first three seasons, Green Bay won 13 games, reached the Super Bowl twice, and earned back-to-back number-one seeds—successes built due to the team’s talent on both sides of the ball.
LaFleur is only five career wins away from surpassing Don Shula for the most victories by a head coach in their first seven seasons. However, he likes to share the credit with every coach and player who has been part of the organization since he took over as HC.
“But, you know, it’s a credit to everybody," LaFleur said during his appearance on the Wednesday, May 21st edition of the Up & Adams Show. "It always is. We’ve had great players, great coaches, and a great organization, so. And the expectation is you better win here.”
The Packers head coach talked about a former All-Pro who was Aaron Rodgers’ go-to target in the late 2010s and had some positive things to say about him.
“I think anytime you have a player of that caliber, there are definitely conversations that go into it—sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn’t,” LaFleur said about Davante Adams and the possibility of bringing him back to Wisconsin early in the year.
LaFleur also said he is not surprised that Adams has risen to become one of the league’s premier receivers.
"Davante is a guy that I got a ton of respect for in terms of who he is as a player," he said. "Certainly, it speaks for itself, but it’s no surprise he has become the type of player he has become. Just how he approaches the game, he is the ultimate competitor. I feel like he treats practice like it’s game day, and that's why he became what he has become."
Adams played three seasons under Matt LaFleur, totaling 321 receptions for 3,924 yards and 34 receiving touchdowns from 2019 to 2021. He caught 83 passes for 997 yards and five touchdowns in 2019, followed by a 2020 campaign with 115 receptions for 1,374 yards and an NFL-leading 18 touchdowns. In 2021, he set career highs with 123 catches for 1,553 yards and 11 touchdowns. He earned three Pro Bowl selections and two All-Pro nominations during that period.
In March, the Los Angeles Rams signed Adams to a two-year, $44 million deal. He joins Sean McVay and Matthew Stafford in what could be a potent offense. While Green Bay will not face Los Angeles in the regular season, a playoff matchup between the two teams would draw significant attention.
