During the Detroit Lions' 34-17 win against the Chicago Bears in Week 16, offensive coordinator Ben Johnson pulled out all the stops by flexing his creativity on a 21-yard Jared Goff touchdown pass to tight end Sam LaPorta in the third quarter.
FOX Sports analyst Emmanuel Acho spotlighted the play on his social media, giving Johnson his flowers with step-by-step analysis and calling it the "coolest offensive play design I’ve ever seen."
On first-and-10 at the Bears' 21-yard line up 27-14 with 12:24 left in the third quarter, Goff and running back Jahmyr Gibbs both fake by pretending to fall down to create just a small moment's worth of hesitation by the Chicago linebackers.
This is probably the coolest offensive play design I’ve ever seen.
The Quarterback & running back act like they trip while the offensive line yells “fumble.” TOUCHDOWN. 🤯🤯#AchoAnalysis | #OnePride | @TheFacilityFS1 10a pic.twitter.com/Fgs0xQPH6O— Emmanuel Acho (@EmmanuelAcho) December 22, 2024
With the linebackers in zone coverage and not flowing into coverage against LaPorta, the second-year tight end could run free down the left side of the field.
With that extra step allowing him to get behind the defense, LaPorta runs free and catches a wide-open touchdown, putting Detroit up 33-14 with the extra point pending.
When Detroit hired head coach Dan Campbell before the 2021 season, he retained Johnson, as both overlapped while working with the Dolphins from 2012 to 2015.
Johnson continues to pad his resume with game film. After deciding to stay with Detroit instead of taking jobs elsewhere over the last two seasons, he is considered one of next year's most desired head coaching candidates. Johnson has been with the Lions since 2019.
