Free Agent Signing Hopes To Be Just What The Bruins Need

'I think there’s opportunity in Boston'.

It’s no secret that the Bruins struggled offensively during the 2024-25 season.

Boston was one of the NHL’s lowest-scoring teams, which put the team at a 33-39-10 regular season record, missing the playoffs.

When free agency hit on July 1, the Bruins signed several players, including forward Alex Steeves, on a one-year contract.

The 25-year-old spent the majority of the 2024-25 season with the Toronto Maple Leafs’ AHL team, the Toronto Marlies. In 59 games, he tallied 36 goals and 26 assists for 52 points.

Steeves also skated in seven NHL games with the Maple Leafs, scoring a goal and an assist.

The New Hampshire native is hoping to make the Bruins’ roster, making it a goal to fill a hole that Boston has had.

“I have a core belief in that vision of myself being a goal scorer in the NHL. It’s up to me to really work my butt off this summer,” Steeves told MassLive’s Matt Vautour. “I think there’s opportunity in Boston, but it’s up to me to grab a hold of that and get better this summer and be better than I was last year and bring something to the team that’s worth something.”

He originally joined the Maple Leafs as an undrafted player before the 2021-22 season. Steeves had logged a few NHL games each year but has spent the majority of his four professional years in the AHL.

“It’s the first time in a while I’m gonna be really going into a camp trying to make a first impression with an organization,” Steeves said. “It’s just being in as good of a headspace as I can be to show that I belong and having that confidence in myself that I really do. …I’m as invigorated and excited for this season as I ever have been in my entire life, and that’s saying something.”
