George Kittle sets reporter straight over false report

The Athletic’s Dianna Russini published a lengthy column on Wednesday containing information about multiple topics, including Kittle. In a section about the San Francisco 49ers, Russini said that the Niners were working on a contract extension for quarterback Brock Purdy. She also reported that Kittle was not in attendance for the start of the Niners’ offseason team activities (OTAs). Russini said Kittle’s absence was due to a contract dispute.

Kittle saw the report and resonded via X.

“Your source is incorrect,” Kittle wrote succintly.

At minimum, Kittle seems to be saying that his absence was not related to his contract. Russini further reported in her article that Kittle wants to become the highest-paid tight end in the NFL. Currently, Trey McBride holds that distinction after signing a for-year, $76 million extension with the Cardinals earlier this month.

Kittle, 31, has played for the Niners since they drafted him in the fifth round in 2017. He has made four straight Pro Bowls and six overall. Kittle had 78 catches for 1,106 yards and 8 touchdowns last season. By comparison, McBride had 111 catches for 1,146 yards and 2 touchdowns last season.
