There perhaps hasn't been as little focus on the first overall pick in many years as there (hasn't) been with Tennessee Titans rookie QB Cam Ward. And one NFL television host thinks that will have a lot of individuals in the media reversing course and giving the former Miami Hurricanes quarterback plenty of attention once the lights come on and the action starts.
Good Morning Football co-host Kyle Brandt had an amusing and strong response to the show question about who would have more of an impact - Ward or Jacksonville Jaguars WR/CB Travis Hunter, the draft's #2 overall pick. Brandt apologized for the ridiculousness of the question, saying it's unequivocally Ward.
"We're asking if the number one overall pick in the draft, who is going to start at quarterback, will have a bigger impact than this guy playing corner or wide receiver. I don't care if Travis Hunter also coaches and punts and kicks field goals and mops up the locker room and drives the team bus and flies the team plane. It's Cam Ward, and I have this apologetic tone because we should know better.
"We're not the other shows. We're supposed to be the people's show of football on the ground floor. We're not afraid to do a segment with those logos here, the Titans' logo here, and the Jags' logo. We're not ripped off the air because we're not showing a Cowboys star or Aaron Rodgers' face. This is a real conversation about who's gonna be more impactful, Travis Hunter or - what are we doing?"
Brandt's understandable - and refreshing, for Titans fans - disdain for the media circus that's enveloped other players outside of Ward was also on full display, and he went ahead and put the NFL media who would be bought in later on blast, saying their silence would change after a hot start by the Titans this fall.
"You know what I can't wait for? I can't wait until the Titans come out at - oh my God, they're 3-1. Cam Ward looks great. Cam Ward is doing Jayden (Daniels) type things from last year and everyone comes storming to the forefront, 'oh this kid's great'. BS. You weren't talking squad about Cam Ward in April, in June. You Johnny and Jill come latelies. Get the hell off the train.
"Cam Ward could engineer a Super Bowl-winning drive, and mass media will be talking about what Shedeur Sandes is actually driving on Instagram, what car he is in. Doesn't matter what he's going to do. If the Titans get to the Super Bowl with Cam Ward, it will be the first flexed out of primetime. That's where we're going right now with this thing, and I will be here for it."
The NFL has had no problem focusing on the brands that bring big eyeballs to their screens, and talk shows often do the same thing. More interest means more ratings, and that's fair, at least to a point.
However, the number one overall pick deserves attention, even if Ward doesn't want it. He's certainly earned it, and if the Titans can get off to a hot start with their rookie and perhaps pull off a Washington/Jayden Daniels type of turnaround quickly, there will be a lot of people turning their attention to Tennessee's franchise guy.
And the Titans will have Brandt in their corner giving out a lot of I-told-you-so's.
