Washington Capitals goaltender Logan Thompson has officially joined the team at informal skates, and now his team-themed gear is en route, too.
On Monday, the 27-year-old netminder debuted his new Capitals-themed mask for the upcoming season, replacing his old Vegas Golden Knights lid.
The mask is mainly blue, featuring eagles and the team wordmark on one side and the capitol building on the other. On the chin are his initials: LT, and on the back is his number and Abraham Lincoln.
Thompson was acquired by the Capitals at the 2024 NHL Draft to fill the void left by Darcy Kuemper. Kuemper was traded to the Los Angeles Kings earlier in the offseason in exchange for Pierre-Luc Dubois.
The plan is for Thompson, who was an All-Star in 2022-23, to compete for ice time with starter Charlie Lindgren.
"It's not the NFL where there's a starter Day 1 and a backup. We'll look at it... How that plays out we'll see, but we feel like we're in a good situation with both goaltenders," head coach Carbery said of the situation between the pipes.
Both netminders have one more year left on their contract and will look to prove that they can be a legitimate No. 1 and earn an extended stay in D.C.
Thompson has been skating with Washington for the past couple of weeks as part of the team's informal skates. Also present include Dubois, Matt Roy, John Carlson, Alex Alexeyev and more current and former team members.
