The Green Bay Packers have had a near unprecedented run of successful quarterback play over the last three decades. Brett Favre, of course, enjoyed 15 years as the starting quarterback in Green Bay, setting a high standard of Hall of Fame play at the position.
Aaron Rodgers, after three seasons as Favre’s backup, took over and had 15 years of his own as the starter that will undoubtedly land him in Canton. And now, Jordan Love is leading the Green Bay offense and is putting up numbers that rival those of his predecessors through their first two seasons as the starter:
Brett Favre | Aaron Rodgers | Jordan Love | |
Completion % | 62.4% | 64.2% | 63.7% |
Passing Yards | 6,530 | 8,472 | 7,548 |
Touchdowns | 37 | 58 | 57 |
Interceptions | 37 | 20 | 22 |
Passer Rating | 78.4 | 98.5 | 96.3 |
Clearly, Green Bay is thrilled that they have Love and have committed to him as their franchise quarterback, having signed him to a massive four-year $220 million contract extension last year.
However, there is one goal at the quarterback position that general manager Brian Gutekunst would still like to accomplish.
After Green Bay named Love their starting quarterback prior to the 2023 NFL Draft, they used a fifth round draft pick on Sean Clifford to be his backup. The following year, in 2024, the Packers selected Tulane quarterback Michael Pratt with one of their seventh round picks.
At the time, many wondered why Gutekunst would use a pick, even a seventh round selection, on another quarterback. His explanation was simple: he wants Green Bay to return to their former reputation as a quarterback factory.
During Favre’s tenure as the Packers’ starter, the team drafted and developed several backups who went on to have incredibly successful NFL careers after they were traded elsewhere. These include notable players like Mark Brunell, Matt Hasselbeck, and Aaron Brooks.
Unfortunately for the Packers, both Clifford and Pratt played incredibly poorly in preseason games and training camp last season. As a result, Green Bay sent a seventh round pick in 2025 to the Tennessee Titans for Malik Willis to serve as Love’s backup.
Both Clifford and Pratt were released. The former was re-signed to the practice squad while the latter signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Willis played well in relief of Love in 2024, having to step in early in the season when the Packers starter went down at the end of Week One with a sprained MCL.
But with offseason programs underway, Green Bay is looking to add a fourth quarterback so that everyone can get enough reps, and they have identified the one they want in Taylor Elgersma:
Elgersma, who won the Canadian college equivalent of the Heisman Trophy, was in Green Bay for a tryout during rookie mini camp last week. As indicated above, they have brought him back for a follow up interview in hopes that he will sign with them.
He is scheduled to attend the Buffalo Bills rookie mini camp this weekend.
