For years, the Green Bay Packers knew exactly what they had in the kicker position. Franchise all-time leading scorer Mason Crosby was not always perfect, but he was reliable and always came up big when they needed him the most. But when the team decided to move on from him after the 2022 NFL season, they entered a short, but frustrating, period of inconsistency at the position.
Anders Carlson, whom the Packers drafted to replace Crosby, led the NFL in missed kicks in 2023 and performed so poorly in training camp in 2024 that Green Bay decided to release him. Unfortunately for the Packers, the kicker they got to replace him Brayden Narveson, led the league in missed kicks until Green Bay released him after seven games.
It was Brandon McManus, a long-time NFL veteran, who brought consistency back to the position in Green Bay. He made 95% of his field goal attempts last season and signed a three-year deal with the team earlier this offseason.
That meant that one other player on their roster became expendable.
Last offseason, the Packers had kicker Alex Hale on their 90-man roster to compete for the kicking job. However, as an international pathway player, he was a longshot to make the final 53, which of course he did not. Due to his IPP status, though, Green Bay was able to keep him on the practice squad as a 17th player.
On Monday, it was reported that the Packers had released him:
Packers insider Tom Silverstein reported on X that Hale suffered an eye injury during a workout and is going to be out for a while. Since the Packers do not want McManus to handle all the kicking duties during training camp, they released Hale so they can sign a new kicker to participate in the preseason program.
It is possible they bring Hale back later.
In five seasons with Oklahoma State in college, Hale made 79.6% of his field goals.
