Jordan Love’s career had a great beginning in 2023, but storm clouds are brewing for the Packers quarterback.
Jordan Love wrapped the 2023 receiving a sea of compliments. However, the 2024 season might end with a different tone. Analysts bought in on the successor to Aaron Rodgers after he defeated the Dallas Cowboys in an unexpected playoff blowout.
The win over the Dallas Cowboys was fun for Packers fans, but it may have been sweeter to see Love’s team rip the win away from the Chicago Bears in Week 11. Either way, one thing going overlooked about the game was how Love allowed the Chicago Bears get in position to beat him in the first place.
Analysts have commented on Jordan Love’s headline grabbing games before, but the tone of one set of comments separates from the rest.
Speaking on a November 22 edition of “Pro Football Talk,” NFL analyst Rodney Harrison blamed Jordan Love’s new contract for the quarterback’s problems. He then recommended a de facto quiet semi-benching for the quarterback.
“I would take the ball out of Jordan Love’s hands. He’s just been a little bit irresponsible with the football.
“I would start running the ball more with Josh Jacobs, getting him the football, running the offense through him. I think Jordan Love, he’s got this big contract and it’s given him the freedom [where] he feels like he can just do anything with the football. At times he’s just very careless,” he said.
Of course, he wouldn’t be the first Green Bay Packers quarterback to be careless with the football from time to time (Brett Favre), but turnovers can doom teams.
The Packers quarterback turned heads last season, throwing for 32 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. This season, it appears all but assured he will step in the wrong direction in one key area. With the interception thrown to the Bears last week, Love is tied for the most interceptions in a season in his career.
At 16 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, he would need to avoid throwing for one more pick the entire year to avoid throwing for more than he ever has. At 7-3, the ratio hasn’t doomed the Packers, but if the team is serious about getting through the playoffs, conventional advice dictates that the turnovers need to slow to a trickle.
In his last three games, Love has thrown for one touchdown and three interception, which might be the most alarming pattern developing. Will Love get back on track or could Packers fans be left wondering if they will need to jump into their first real quarterback search in 30 years after all.
