Philadelphia Eagles fans can count their blessings that general manager Howie Roseman knows when to let players go from the team at the right time.
Former Eagles edge rusher Haason Reddick has been a prime example of that, having spent only two years in Philadelphia in 2022 and 2023. Since he has left the Eagles in a trade with the New York Jets, it has been issue after issue.
Last year, a contract dispute cost him the opportunity for most of the first half of the NFL season. Reddick ended up signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during the offseason, but his issue with them has been that he missed most of OTAs.
This has already caused a sour taste in the Buccaneers' mouths and another reason Eagles fans are happy to not deal with that.
Bleacher Report writer Gary Davenport went through the big winners and losers of NFL OTAs. To no one's surprise, in Philadelphia, Reddick was labeled a loser after failing to demonstrate his commitment to learning a new defense and missing most of the OTAs.
"The 2024 season was a nightmare for veteran edge-rusher Haason Reddick. It started with a contract impasse with the New York Jets and ended with the 30-year-old managing one measly sack.
Now, Reddick finds himself in Tampa on a one-year, “prove it” deal. Except Reddick hasn’t really been in Tampa—despite needing to learn a new defense, Reddick skipped most of OTAs to work out on his own.
It’s not a good look for the veteran, especially after last year’s fiasco in the Big Apple. If fall rolls around and Reddick starts piling up sacks, this will all be forgotten. But if Reddick gets off to a slow start for a Buccaneers team that badly needs pass-rushing help, the grumbles are going to start regarding Reddick’s level of commitment—whether those grumbles are justified or not."
Reddick did show up late at OTAs last week, but he faced criticism for not being there the whole time. It has led some to wonder if the Buccaneers made a mistake signing him.
The Eagles didn't have those issues with Reddick at the beginning, after he signed a three-year, $45 million contract in 2022. He was a dominant force on the Eagles' defense, racking up 27 sacks, earning two Pro Bowls, and securing a second-team All-Pro selection in just two seasons.
It only came at the end when he wanted more money, and the Eagles were unwilling to do so. Roseman ended up trading him to the Jets for a conditional 2026 mid-round selection that has become a third round pick.
Reddick had just one sack in 10 games with the Jets last year. He signed a one-year, $14 million contract with the Buccaneers this offseason.
Philadelphia doesn't have to worry about Reddick anymore, as the Eagles fans continue to watch him make mistakes after having a great opportunity here to finish out his contract and maybe get a new one after that.
