Sons of Anarchy alum Kim Coates teased what to expect from his villainous character in the upcoming second season of AMC’s The Walking Dead: Dead City. Coates has been tapped to portray the role of Bruegel, who will be one of the new key recurring characters in the next installment.
During a recent interview with MovieWeb, Coates revealed that showrunner Eli Jorné specifically wrote the character of Bruegel for him. He also went on to tease the villain’s lavish lifestyle and big personality. "Jorné picked me and said 'You have to play this guy,' and I said 'Send me some of the scripts,' and they did. I gotta tell you, this guy was written for me," Coates shared. "He's a dink. He's just a bad person, he's super smart, he's a billionaire. He lived in this incredible enclave during the zombie apocalypse in Manhattan, and when he came out, zombies were running through Manhattan. He got his own little gang together. There's three or four gangs in Season 2, and Brugal is my name, and I'm certainly the biggest gang member of my squad. I kill a lot of zombies."
The Walking Dead spinoff is executive produced by Jorné, Scott M. Gimple, Lauren Cohan, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Brian Bockrath, Michael Satrazemis and Colin Walsh. The story brings fans to post-apocalyptic Manhattan, where the once lively city is now dominated by the dead and denizens who have made New York City their own world full of anarchy, danger, beauty, and terror. The ensemble cast is once again led by franchise vets Cohan and Morgan as they reprise their fan-favorites roles as Maggie and Negan, respectively. Season 2 will also feature returning cast members Gaius Charles as Perlie Armstrong, Željko Ivanek as The Croat, Mahina Anne Marie Napoleon as Ginny, Lisa Emery as The Dama, and Logan Kim as Hershel Rhee.
The official logline for Dead City Season 2 reads, “In the growing war for control of Manhattan, Maggie and Negan find themselves trapped on opposite sides. As their paths intertwine, they come to see that the way out for both is more complicated and harrowing than they ever imagined.” Besides Coates, the next installment will also introduce four more new characters in the form of Major Lucia Narvaez, Benjamin Pierce, Christos, and Roksana, who are respectively portrayed by Dascha Polanco (Orange Is the New Black), Keir Gilchrist (Atypical), Jake Weary (Oh, Canada), and Pooya Mohseni (Law & Order: SVU).
Negan’s Reunion With Lucille in Dead City Season 2
In a previous interview, Morgan shared what it was like reuniting with Negan’s beloved barbwire-wrapped baseball bat Lucille, teasing the sense of power that his character will regain in Season 2. "Well, I freaked out. I didn’t realize how much I missed her, not only as Negan, but as myself," Morgan said. "Just getting to hold that damn bat again adds something to that character and the swagger and the confidence and the humor that Negan has. It’s been sorely missed," he continued. "The second that she’s back in Negan’s hands, he is empowered in some way that he hasn’t been in the last few years. It was a cool thing, having her back."
