Hendon Hooker has earned the right to be treated as Lions' backup quarterback

The Detroit Lions have one of the most intriguing backup quarterback situations in the league, and after the first preseason game, things should have gotten a lot clearer for the franchise.

Hendon Hooker has earned the right to be treated as Lions' backup quarterback

This offseason, the Lions added Kyle Allen to the mix as competition for Hendon Hooker. Allen didn't provide much against the Los Angeles Chargers as he threw two interceptions and accounted for 91 yards.

While Hooker later threw an interception of his own, he wasn't given a fair chance to impact the game, coming in when the Lions were down multiple scores and obviously trying to force offense. Hooker didn't even get a fair shot to lead any type of a consistent game plan.

Yet, watching Hooker in practice, it's easy to see why he should get more of a chance as Detroit's backup. He's versatile in the pocket, and can extend plays with his legs. He shows good instincts when dropping back to pass, and does possess a good arm when he has time to survey the field.

Dan Campbell makes smart move giving Hooker start vs. Atlanta Falcons

Hooker has more to offer than a pure pocket passer, and the biggest issue he faces with the Lions is never being able to prove himself with the proper playmakers on the field. Mechanically, there's always something to work on, but a lot can be said for having the right players helping a quarterback.

Putting Hooker on the field with the first-team offense could net a better result than what has been shown thus far. The Lions only need to show him the faith and respect that he should have earned by grinding behind the scenes to improve during the offseason.

In order to build Hooker's confidence, the Lions are going to have to cut him loose, apply more pressure and give him reps with other players who have a future on the roster. They're also going to have to give him some starts and the chance to gain confidence.

Fortunately, Campbell confirmed that would be the case for Week 2 of the preseason. Hooker will get the start against the Atlanta Falcons, and will be given the chance at leading the offense in the first-half.

Campbell explained that he believes both Allen and Hooker weren't satisfied by their tough start to the preseason, and are eager to get back on the field and prove themselves after a rocky performance.

"I can tell you both of those guys, it goes without saying they're frustrated with the way that went and they both want to improve and get better, and they will."

The Lions should be most interested in seeing what Hooker can do in this context rather than Allen, who doesn't have much more to prove. There's not likely to be a ton of top tier players playing, but hopefully Hooker has enough weapons on the field to really show what he could do.

If the Lions want Hooker to be their long-term backup, they need to start treating him as if he's the guy to get his mind in the right place.
