Houston Texans Wide Receiver Projected To Get $84 Million Contract in 2025 Free Agency

2025 might be several months away but the list of NFL stars who may receive hefty contracts is growing. Among those who are projected to get a big bag of money by that time is Houston Texans wide receiver Stefon Diggs.

The Texans have made a significant adjustment to Diggs’ contract following his trade from the Buffalo Bills, setting the stage for him to enter free agency in 2025. As part of the trade agreement, the Texans eliminated the final three years of his existing deal, restructuring it to include four void years. This adjustment allows the wide receiver to secure a one-year contract worth approximately $22.52 million for the upcoming season.

This strategic move has given Diggs the flexibility to become an unrestricted free agent in 2025, meaning his tenure with the Texans could be brief unless both parties decide to negotiate an extension. The Texans’ approach can be seen as a way to encourage the wide receiver to perform at a high level alongside promising young quarterback C.J. Stroud.

By acquiring Diggs in exchange for a 2025 second-round draft pick and two later picks, the Texans aim to bolster their roster after a surprising playoff appearance last season. The team hopes that he can regain his elite form, making this trade a worthwhile investment. If he excels, the Texans may opt to keep him beyond 2024, but they are not locked into a long-term commitment.

Houston Texans’ Stefon Diggs Predicted To Receive $84 Million Contract in 2025 Free Agency

Texans WR Stefon Diggs says Bills didn't want to trade him

Whatever his performance may be this season, Diggs is slated to enter free agency next year. According to an NFL analysis by David Kenyon for Bleacher Report, the Texans star is projected to land a lucrative contract by that period.

Diggs’ value will likely hinge on his performance in Houston following four stellar seasons in Buffalo. Diggs topped 1,100 receiving yards and caught at least eight touchdown passes in each of those campaigns.

If the 30-year-old can replicate that production in an offense that also features Nico Collins, Tank Dell, Dalton Schultz and Robert Woods, he’ll likely surge past Amari Cooper as the top “aging” receiver in the 2025 market.

Expect Diggs to command significantly more than the $23 million annual salary that Calvin Ridley got in free agency this year—he’s only a year older than Ridley and has a far more impressive resume—though he’ll probably fall a bit short of Aiyuk’s contract.

Projected Contract Value: Three Years, $84 Million

Diggs has been a standout receiver in the league, leading in receiving yards from 2020 to 2023 and consistently ranking among the top players in receptions and touchdowns. However, his role diminished last season after a change in Buffalo’s offensive strategy, prompting the Bills to trade him rather than continue with a large dead cap hit.

It remains to be seen whether Diggs can have a good showing in Houston this season. In any case, the wide receiver will still command significant interest when 2025 comes around.
