Huge Steelers Rival Terrell Suggs Comes To The Defense Of Ben Roethlisberger

The Pittsburgh Steelers were one of the best teams in the NFL throughout the 2000s and the early-2010s. The organization won two Super Bowls in the 2000s, and made a third at the end of the 2010 season which it ultimately lost to the Green Bay Packers. Aside from the New England Patriots, the Steelers have an argument of being the most dominant team in the AFC over that timeframe. A lot of that had to do with the stifling defense that Pittsburgh had, but it was also the play of future Hall of Famer Ben Roethlisberger.

Roethlisberger is often over-shadowed by the other quarterbacks that played in the NFL during the same time as him. Tom Brady, who is considered the best of all time, Peyton ManningDrew BreesAaron Rodgers, and sometimes even Eli Manning or Phillip Rivers are all spoken about in higher regards than Roethlisberger. The reality of the situation is that only one of those quarterbacks has more Super Bowl rings than Roethlisberger, and three of them have less.

Former Baltimore Ravens outside linebacker Terrell Suggs had tons of great battles with the Steelers and Roethlisberger, some of which came in the postseason. Despite their heated rivalry, the two always had respect for one another, and that respect continued as Suggs came to Roethlisberger's defense on a recent episode of Rory & Mal Don't Know Ball.

"You only know the really good ones." Suggs said about quarterbacks. "You know the guy from Foxboro, 12. You got Peyton, Drew, you know Roethlisberger. I would say he's underrated. I mean he a two-time Super Bowl winner, played in three. I would say Roethlisberger is underrated, like he got more rings than Rodgers, he got more rings than Brees. More rings than [Dan] Marino. He got as many as Peyton and Eli, you know what I'm saying? I would say Roethlisberger, he's probably the most underrated."

Suggs was discussing quarterbacks on the show, and he was asked about the most underrated quarterbacks. He brought up Roethlisberger because of the quarterbacks from his generation that get mentioned before him, like Brees, Rivers, and either one of the Manning brothers. Peyton was certainly a better quarterback than Roethlisberger, but the same cannot be said about Eli or Rivers. Brees was better statistically, but he could not win games like Roethlisberger could.

Roethlisberger won two Super Bowls with the help of one of the best defenses in the NFL, which is what a lot of people would say when trying to rip apart the quarterback's career. However, people cannot forget how clutch Roethlisberger was at the end of Super Bowl XLIII.

Santonio Holmes or James Harrison are often talked about as the heroes of that game, but NFL fans cannot forget the fact that Roethlisberger led his team 78 yards down the field with two-and-a-half minutes to go. The pressure does not get higher than that.

The quarterback's game-winning touchdown pass is also looked back on as an amazing catch by Holmes, which it was, but it was also an amazing throw. Roethlisberger floated the ball over three defenders and put it right where only his guy could get it.

Steelers' Roethlisberger Is One Of The Best Quarterbacks In NFL History

Roethlisberger's name is all over the NFL's leaderboards when it comes to his statistics. He ranks in the top five when it comes to all-time passing yards, the top six in completions, and he is in the top ten in passing touchdowns.

On top of that, only six quarterbacks in history have more victories in the Super Bowl than Roethlisberger. His career is one of the best in the NFL's history, and while some of his counterparts from when he played might have had slightly better statistics, he likely had more team success.
