Getting a running back like Nick Chubb is going to help transform the Houston Texans' offense from what it was last year to something elite -- even if Chubb isn't what he once was.
I think we all know that the former Cleveland Browns running back isn't expecting to come into the Texans and be that same superstar guy that he once was, you know, the guy that was once considered one of, if not the best, running backs in the league. But, he still can be a really, really good football player for Houston
Chubb isn't going to be asked to be that guy, though. He will be expected to help the Texans have a more efficient run game without having to use Joe Mixon every single snap. And, I believe that he can do that. I believe that Chubb can be a good running back for the Texans.
He believes it, too, despite what the narratives are.
“I would say that's all behind me and, you know, injuries happen," Chubb told reporters earlier this week at mandatory minicamp. "And with what I did, it takes about two years to really get back. And so, I'm over the hump. I'm back home. I was back home all offseason training, where I trained, you know, every year since I was in high school. And I was able to get a full year in of doing the things that I do best. And so now I'm feeling good as I have been in a long time.”
There is a narrative that Chubb is done and that he won't be good enough to play football anymore. And, I have to say, that is insane to say. But, it's not insane to say that the guy won't be what he once was. Yes, he has had a handful of injuries, most to both of his knees, but the guy won't forget how to play the position. The biggest thing will be speed, and the Texans seem to think he is still fast, or they wouldn't have signed him.
Last year, Joe Mixon somehow made something out of nothing at times. The plays would break down, and he would pull off a miraculous run play after not having a gap created for him at all by the offensive line. That can't happen every single play this year, because it will wear him out. The Texans will need a guy who can come in and give the run game some fresh feet every once in a while.
The Texans feel like he's over the hump, too.
