Iga Swiatek has spoken about the widely discussed PTPA lawsuit against the tennis governing bodies, mainly the ATP and WTA. The lawsuit aims to create a balance in the tennis circuit regarding finances and doping regulations.
PTPA members and player councils claimed they had the support of over 30 ATP and WTA players for the lawsuit. However, Swiatek denied being involved in any negotiations.
I don’t have an opinion because I wasn’t involved in any way, no one asked me anything, so I found out like all of you, through the press. I have openly expressed that competing for 11 months a year is insane, completely unnecessary, and that the season should be shorter.
Iga Swiatek said in her post-match press conference (H/T: Punto de Break)
Surprisingly, Swiatek is not the only player making these statements. Carlos Alcaraz also said he was unaware of the lawsuit and only learned about it through social media.
On the WTA side, Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka have also voiced concerns about the lawsuit, distancing themselves from it. For now, Swiatek is focused on the Miami Open, where she will face Elise Mertens in the Round of 32.
Iga Swiatek secures opening round win in Miami
WTA No. 2 seed Iga Swiatek defeated Caroline Garcia again to reach the Miami Open third round. She won 6-2, 7-5, marking her second victory over Garcia in two tournaments. Two weeks ago at Indian Wells, Swiatek won easily in just 61 minutes against her.
This time, Garcia fought harder, even leading 3-1 in the second set and earning a set point at 5-4. But Swiatek stayed strong, winning the last three games to improve her record against Garcia to 6-1.
Swiatek started fast, winning the first 10 points before Garcia responded. In the second set, she broke early to lead 1-0 but then lost three games in a row due to unforced errors. She later explained that she experienced a drop in energy during that stretch.
With this win, Swiatek set a new WTA 1000 record. She became the first player to win 25 straight opening matches at this level since the format began in 2009. Her streak started in Cincinnati 2021, where she lost in the second round after a first-round bye.
In the Miami Open second round, Swiatek will face No. 27 seed Elise Mertens. Mertens advanced by using smart drop shots to defeat Peyton Stearns 6-4, 6-1.
Iga Swiatek massively criticized after Indian Wells incident
Polish star Iga Swiatek has stepped out of her comfort zone to ask for fairer media coverage. She deserves respect for all she has achieved in tennis. Despite her success, she often faces criticism and negativity.
At just 23 years old, Swiatek has already won five Grand Slam titles. Her achievements place her among legends like Martina Hingis and Maria Sharapova. However, she has never enjoyed the intense spotlight that comes with being a top player.
Swiatek has become one of the most recognized faces in tennis. Still, she struggles when the media turns against her. This was clear when she apologized for hitting a ball in anger at Indian Wells, nearly hitting a ball kid.
She has faced tough moments in recent months. A doping test in late 2024 caused problems, even though she was not at fault. During that time, she received little media support. Despite being a great champion, she has not always been the most popular player.
