Iga Swiatek Surpasses Serena Williams, Sets New Record at Indian Wells

Iga Swiatek continues her formidable performance at Indian Wells, advancing to the quarter-finals with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Karolina Muchova. Indian Wells seems to be Swiatek’s stomping ground, evident in her victorious campaigns in 2022 and 2024. Her latest win comes after a brief rain delay, which did little to dampen her spirits or her game.

In her post-match comments, Swiatek expressed satisfaction with her performance, noting her ability to adapt after the rain delay. She highlighted her confidence on the court and her satisfaction with her swift victory, which concluded before the rain resumed.

Her latest win at Indian Wells has further cemented her record in W1000 tournaments. Swiatek now holds the highest percentage of quarter-finals reached in WTA-1000 events (61.8%, 21/34) since the format was introduced in 2009. This achievement nudges her ahead of the legendary Serena Williams, who previously held the second position with a quarter-finals appearance rate of 61.2% in tournaments at this level throughout her illustrious career.

Swiatek’s record at Indian Wells is also noteworthy. Since 1989, only Monica Seles and Steffi Graf have secured 30 combined wins in fewer matches at Indian Wells and Miami. With 34 matches, Swiatek matches the record held by Chris Evert and Venus Williams. Moreover, only Lindsay Davenport (six, 1993-1998) and Martina Hingis (five, 1998-2002) have achieved more consecutive quarter-finals than Swiatek at Indian Wells since the tournament’s inception in 1989.

These impressive statistics underscore Swiatek’s consistency and dominance in the game. She is thriving in the conditions at Indian Wells, particularly after the installation of new courts this year by a different company. Swiatek noted a slight difference between the center court and the practice courts, but this is a common occurrence at most tournaments.

Swiatek’s win keeps her in contention for the top spot in the WTA rankings. While she may not surpass Aryna Sabalenka in this tournament, her current form indicates that she could very well be vying for the number one position in the coming months. As Swiatek continues to impress in Indian Wells, the tennis world waits in anticipation to see if she can surpass more records and potentially ascend to the pinnacle of the WTA rankings.
