Another injury has impacted Green Bay Packers training camp. While head coach Matt LaFleur had no intentions of playing his starters in the remaining two preseason games, all it took was two drives for their QB to get banged up.
Medical staff evaluated Green Bay’s $220 million QB yesterday as he was looking at his thumb. Less than 24 hours later it was announced that the star player will be undergoing surgery.
Green Bay Packers Hope Jordan Love Can Return From Thumb Surgery as Soon as Next Week
The Packers first estimate of Jordan Love’s thumb is that he could be back next week. At this point, they are “hopeful” that he won’t be missing the regular-season opener on September 7. While Malik Willis shined in the two games he started last season, there’s no doubt that Love wants to avenge his two losses to the Detroit Lions last season.
Love did little to no damage in the Packers preseason opener. He went 1-5 in two drives with his lone completion being to rookie, Matthew Golden. Last year, Love missed the first few days of training camp as he was holding out due to contract negotiations. He failed to stay healthy for the 2024 season, with the team hoping that wouldn’t be the case in 2025.
Ultimately, Green Bay would rather get this out of the way now. Adam Schefter reports Love is, “undergoing a procedure on a ligament issue with his left thumb.”
Packers GM Brian Gutekunst said the ligament issue is the reason Love had his thumb taped in practice yesterday. While it appeared to be a non-issue, the team has quickly decided to go the route of surgery. Gutey is hopeful that Love will return to practice next week.
Love, “banged it on a helmet taking a sack,” according to Ian Rapoport. The sack came on the final play of the 26-year-olds second drive. It looked like he was about to take off and run, but he quickly stopped himself and took a sack instead.
Injury Bug is Running Wild in Green Bay
Jayden Reed was seen in a walking boot prior to the Packers preseason opener against the New York Jets. Reed has been the leading receiver in Green Bay for the past two seasons. As Love’s favorite, and arguably most reliable target, the Packers are hopeful that he’ll be back for the regular season opener as well.
A pair of defensive stars have been ruled out the rest of training camp. Newcomer, Nate Hobbs, had quite the start to his tenure in Green Bay. He was yelled at for going too hard in practice, nearly contributing to the injury of MarShawn Lloyd. Injuries have plagued the career of Hobbs who Green Bay just signed to a four-year, $48 million deal.
Elsewhere, Xavier McKinney is expected to be back by Week 1. McKinney is dealing with a calf injury that has kept him out of practice. It was noted to be a lingering issue, one that didn’t phase the Packers $68 million man who played all 17 games last season.
