Drake and Serena Williams have engaged in a war of words since reports that they dated in the mid-2010s.

Serena Williams stunned Super Bowl viewers after being brought out during the half-time show by Kendrick Lamar. The tennis icon danced along to the rapper’s performance of ‘Not Like Us’, a diss track aimed at fellow artist Drake.

The tune features inflammatory lyrics about Drake. Most of the Super Bowl crowd joined in with the lyrics as Lamar sang the lines and Williams danced along.

Lamar bringing out Williams was a huge shock. The 23-time Grand Slam champion performed a choreographed dance.

But fans were gripped by the potentially deeper meaning behind Williams' appearance. That is because she is widely understood to have dated Drake in the early to mid-2010s.

The Canadian rapper has all but confirmed their relationship and was seen at several of her matches during that period. In 2015, they were pictured cuddling and sharing a kiss.

Seemingly loved up at the time, Drake’s 2013 song ‘Worst Behaviour’ featured the lyrics: "I'm with my whole set, tennis matches at the crib. I swear I could beat Serena when she playin' with her left”.

Williams, who has since married Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, has never spoken about their relationship but both parties have since made digs at the other. In 2016, Drake released ‘Too Good’, which includes the lyrics: "I'm too good to you / I'm way too good to you / You take my love for granted / I just don't understand it."

Those lyrics are quite the U-turn from his 2013 affection for Williams and he has since confirmed that the 2016 verse is about her. That is a potential hint that it was the former WTA world No. 1 who broke off their relationship.

Drake went one further in 2022 by calling out Williams’ husband. In his track ‘Middle of the Ocean’, he says: “Sidebar, Serena, your husband a groupie.”

Ohanian subsequently posted on X: "The reason I stay winning is because I'm relentless about being the absolute best at whatever I do, including being the best groupie for my wife and daughter."

Williams has referenced Lamar’s feud with Drake, which has consisted of various diss tracks over a number of years. At the 2024 ESPY Awards, she said on stage: "If I've learned anything this year, it's that none of us, not a single one of us, not even me, should ever pick a fight with Kendrick Lamar.”

After dancing to ‘Not Like Us’, she added: "He will make your hometown not like you. The next time Drake sits courtside at a Raptors game, they're going to Forrest Gump him. Seats taken."

It remains to be seen whether Drake responds to Williams’ latest actions.
