Inside Elijah Ponder’s transition from Cal Poly to New England Patriots camp

Elijah Ponder isn’t the kind of player who’s easily overlooked. In his time with Cal Poly football, he was a relentless force off the edge, known for his tenacity, strength and leadership.

Now, the former Mustang defensive end is taking those same traits to Foxborough, Massachusetts as he fights for a roster spot with the New England Patriots.

Since signing as an undrafted free agent following the 2025 NFL Draft, Ponder has thrown himself into training camp, fully aware of the stakes.

“Training camp at all levels is intense,” he said. “At the NFL, it’s probably the most intense that I have felt. I’m just trying to get acclimated to that and keep grinding.”

While it is still early in the preseason, Ponder is putting himself in position to make the 53-man roster by carving out a role as core special team player and developmental edge rusher.

In the Patriots preseason opener against the Washington commanders, Ponder put on an impressive performance, contributing key blocks for a 100-yard opening kickoff touchdown return, and a 60-yard kick return later in the game. He played on the defensive edge for multiple series in the first half.

Ponder’s work ethic traces back to San Luis Obispo, where he developed into one of the most dominant defenders in program history. Over his five-year career at Cal Poly, Ponder recorded 27 sacks, 43.5 tackles for loss and a program-record 44 quarterback hurries. His senior season culminated in a trip to the 2025 East-West Shrine Bowl, where he impressed NFL scouts with his explosiveness and motor.

Though Ponder didn’t hear his name called during the draft, he quickly made his decision to sign with the Patriots and make the move to New England. The following transition from college football to the NFL hasn’t come without its challenges.

“Within a football team, you’re going to have a lot of different personalities,” he said. “Coming from Cal Poly, and now seeing guys from places like USC, the ACC, and other big schools, it’s definitely a culture shock.”

Despite the change in scenery, Ponder has stayed focused on being healthy and consistent, the two traits he believes are key to earning a jersey on Sundays.

“I just keep putting in the work, making sure I’m healthy and available,” he said. “As long as I do that, I’ll be ready to go.”

While Cal Poly fans remember him as the relentless edge rusher, those close to the program also recall his growth under head coach Paul Wulff.

That foundation, paired with a steady support system, continues to carry him through this pivotal chapter.

“My family is always going to be my biggest support system,” Ponder said. “My girlfriend, everyone back home are all supporting me, wishing me the best.”

For Ponder, the path may not be the most conventional, but it’s a familiar one for Cal Poly athletes. He follows in the footsteps of other undrafted Mustangs who’ve worked their way onto NFL rosters with grit and persistence. And while the journey is still unfolding, there’s little doubt that the Mustang in him is built for it.

“I’m enjoying my time out here,” he said. “Just trying to get better, make an impression on my teammates and coaches, and keep doing the right things. I love it.”
