Insider buzz links Lions to surprise early upgrade in 2025 NFL Draft

The Detroit Lions could be looking to shake things up at wide receiver, and they find themselves in prime position to unearth quality solutions during the 2025 NFL Draft.

QOTD: Should the Lions trade Jameson Williams to move up from #28 in the NFL Draft?

Though the position isn't as deep as in the past, there is plenty of talent at the top, which could help a team like the Lions if they so choose. Interestingly enough, a new report sheds some light on where receivers could end up being selected.

Adam Schefter dropped a draft report that should thrill Lions fans

ESPN insider Adam Schefter (paywall) dropped some last-minute knowledge before the draft and said he believes some of the best wide receiver talent will be found early on Day 2:

"Thursday night of the draft always is the headliner. But Friday night gives teams just as much of a chance to upgrade their roster. One of the strengths of the 2025 class is the wide receiver talent available on Day 2, where Mel Kiper Jr. and Field Yates had nine wideouts being selected in their most recent mock draft."

"Two of those receivers are likely to be Iowa State standouts Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel. Others that could fall in that range include Washington State's Kyle Williams and TCU duo of Jack Bech and Savion Williams. Last year, there was a run on second-day receivers that included Keon Coleman going No. 33 to Buffalo and Ladd McConkey going No. 34 to the Chargers. There is expected to be another Day 2 receiver run this year."

The Lions select at No. 60 in the second round, which may be a bit far down the board to nab a receiver if there is a run on the position in the 30s or 40s.

On the flip side, that could mean they potentially consider picking a receiver at No. 28. They could also wait to see if anyone falls to their next pick,or consider trading up in Round 2 if the right prospect is still available.

Don't be surprised if the Lions draft a wide receiver within the first three rounds

While receiver might not appear to be a huge need for the Lions, it's clear the franchise is considering everything when it comes to the draft. A few rumblings have emerged about Jameson Williams being available, and if a deal plays out, it's likely the Lions will select a wide receiver early in the 2025 draft.

Even if the Lions don't trade Williams, the position could be prime for another early upgrade. General manager Brad Holmes was asked ahead of the draft about potentially adding a receiver this year and hinted it's one of the positions a team always needs:

"It's kind of like we talk about cornerback, you just really can't ever have enough of them. The only thing about receiver is that I always felt like it is probably one of the deeper positions in each draft. So there's probably more of those guys, even veteran free agents, that are available after the draft as well. We're happy with the guys that we have. Very happy with the guys we have, but obviously, it'd be great to get younger."

If there's a run on receivers in the second round, as Schefter predicts, don't forget about the Lions potentially being involved. It seems like the position could be firmly on their radar in this draft.
