The post-LeBron James era for the Los Angeles Lakers appears to be coming sooner rather than later. After seven years with the team, it’s looking more and more like the future Hall of Famer is considering a change of scenery.
Once the offseason hit, his agent, Rich Paul, put out an eye-opening statement suggesting that the Lakers and James want different things right now. That was the first sign that a divorce could be inevitable.
However, James opted into his contract with the team, so if he’s going to go anywhere, it’s going to have to be via trade. James has been pretty loyal to the Lakers since joining the team in 2018, but once the Luka Doncic trade happened, things began to change.
Los Angeles is no longer reliant on James and doesn’t have to cater to what he wants. ESPN’s Shams Charania offered some insight into the situation.
“The moment that trade was made when Luka Doncic goes for Anthony Davis, it was like ‘alright, AD is now joining a win-now team in Dallas; Luka Doncic face of the franchise for the next eight to ten years’ that was really the vision,” Charania said on SiriusXM NBA Radio. “But anytime you’re in LA, the Lakers, the goal is to compete for a championship. And that team was actually in home-court competition; they ended up staying in that even after the trade, so that set some expectations.”
“LeBron James, on the other hand, he’s 40 years old, going to be 41, he wants to play for a championship next season, he’s made that abundantly clear,” Charania added. “His agent, Rich Paul, told me that very directly, he wants a realistic chance to compete for a championship. And so, no matter that he has one year left, two years left, or three years left, he wants to be in that mode.”
Situation Could Be Resolved in Next Couple of Months
James wants to play for champions, and it sounds like he doesn’t think the Lakers can do that despite the fact that they were the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference last season. That said, it doesn’t sound like either side wants to draw out this process too much.
Charania believes it will get resolved in the next couple of months.
“He feels, clearly, that the Lakers are in a more futuristic mindset,” Charania said. “Where does that go? If one side says I want to compete for a championship, and the other side wants to compete for the future – where does that meet on the road that we see? And I think that situation will play out over the next two months, I think some hard conversations will eventually need to happen there.”
Any Chance James Returns?
While it’s looking like James could be on his way out, there’s still a very strong chance he’ll be with the Lakers for one more season. Doncic led the Dallas Mavericks to the NBA Finals two years ago, so Los Angeles isn’t out of the title race yet.
Plus, not a lot of teams are going to want to take on James’ $52 million salary for the 2025-26 season. In the end, don’t be surprised if he stays in Los Angeles.
