The Tennessee Titans brought in head coach Brian Callahan last season to fix the quarterback position and set the franchise on a successful path for the future. Unfortunately, his first year did not go as planned, and the team had the worst record in the NFL.
While he was given another chance to prove himself this season with a different quarterback, the crop of free agent and college players at the position is not as strong as it was this time last year. The Athletic's Joe Rexrode recently wrote about the situation and Callahan's standing within the organization ahead of the NFL Combine and Draft.
"And then you have head coach Brian Callahan, realistically on the hot seat entering his second season," wrote Rexrode. "He’s looking at a second opportunity to prove he’s a QB whisperer — perhaps with win-total challenges — or getting a veteran to better help reverse the bottom line."
Last season, the team had Will Levis under center, who was one of the worst quarterbacks in the NFL. Given Callahan's track record of success with players at the position, Levis took most of the blame for the Titans' woes in 2024.
Tennessee will certainly add another quarterback to the room, and if the result is much better, Callahan should keep his job. If the team does not improve with a different signal-caller, then the organization would point at Callahan as the common thread in the team's lack of success.
Veteran players like Sam Darnold, Russell Wilson and Justin Fields could be viable options in free agency, and Matthew Stafford may become available via trade. But if Callahan was smart, he would buy some time by drafting either Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders.
