Insider: Steelers' Roman Wilson Out For Multiple Weeks

Earlier in training camp on Tuesday, the Pittsburgh Steelers received some very concerning news: their rookie wide receiver, Roman Wilson, was carted off of the practice field with an ankle injury. With the severe lack of depth in the Steelers' receiving core, this could end up being a major blow to the team. He was seemingly making strides in camp while looking to compete in a starting role, but now that is all put to a halt as the Steelers wait to see what happens with their new receiver.

Jeremy Fowler reported on that Wilson does not have a serious injury, but valuable time will still be missed unfortunately.

Something that is week to week could be something like an ankle sprain, and that would just need time to get through. Even though he was taken off on a cart, that is not necessarily a big negative as it would be in a game. In training camp, the cart is used as a precaution, just to make sure the injured body part does not worsen just by limping to the sideline. Ankle injuries can be very scary, so it's great to hear that he does not have a more serious injury.

Steelers That Will Have To Step Up

Van Jefferson was already seen as the team's probable starting receiver outside of George Pickens,  so he will continue in that role. Meanwhile, guys like Calvin Austin III and Quez Watkins will be expected to take some valuable snaps with the first team offense in the slot. Other depth pieces such as Scotty Miller or Dez Fitzpatrick may get a few extra chances to step up as well, at least on the second team offense. Either way, it's all hands on deck to help fill the shoes of the versatile rookie.
