While many expect the Cleveland Browns will select a quarterback in April's upcoming draft, there is another direction they could go.
The Cleveland Browns are at a crossroads this offseason and have a virtual plethora of directions they can go.
With so many needs up and down the roster, April's NFL Draft could be key to improving the team and taking the next step toward the franchise's ultimate goal of winning its first Super Bowl.
The quarterback position is one of the biggest question marks in Cleveland, especially after the news that Deshaun Watson re-injured his Achilles and will most likely miss the entire 2025 season.
It's also possible that Watson has played his last down of football with the Browns. Considering that, a quarterback could be a priority in the draft.
But it's not a very deep draft for quarterbacks, and the ones that will be available might not be future franchise signal callers by some estimations.
With that in mind, The Athletic's Dane Brugler thinks Cleveland could go a different direction with the No. 2 overall pick in April.
"It’s likely that Deshaun Watson has played his final snap for the Cleveland Browns, so a quarterback certainly will be on the table here," Brugler wrote. "But I don’t expect Cleveland to force the pick if the right fit isn’t there. Carter playing opposite Myles Garrett would be a scary thought for opposing offenses."
But Brugler goes even further and indicates the Browns still don't go quarterback in the second round, but instead select Minnesota Golden Gophers offensive tackle Aireontae Ersery.
It's possible Brugler thinks the Browns could go quarterback in the later rounds or they'll find a veteran in free agency. Either way, it would surprise a lot of people if Cleveland passed on a quarterback in the upcoming draft.
