Is 49ers Brock Purdy Worth $50 Million? Cowboys Dak Prescott Offers Answer

Among many looming offseason decisions for the San Francisco 49ers, one of the biggest is whether to extend quarterback Brock Purdy. Purdy is about to enter the final year of his rookie deal, and reports indicate that the former Mr. Irrelevant is seeking $60 million per annum.

Fox Sports host Colin Cowherd took exception to the reports of what Purdy is seeking, and he made sure to air out his grievances on the air. He first compared the 49ers and Purdy to the Dallas Cowboys and Dan Prescott.

"We've seen with Dak, if you pay A+ money to a B to a B+ quarterback, you can't have a legitimate roster," Cowherd said. "I mean, look at the Cowboys compared to the Eagles. How many guys would even start from the Cowboys on the Eagles? Because you've been overpaying Dak for years and years and years."

Cowherd further went on to look at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an example in the opposite direction, citing Baker Mayfield's $33 million salary, stating "I'd take Baker over Brock Purdy in a second... They're getting a deal."

Cowherd divided quarterbacks into three groups regarding a $50 million a year price tag.

The first club being "I'm going to pay ya what I gotta pay ya", which features Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, Justin Herbert, Matthew Stafford, Joe Burrow, Jared Goff and Jordan Love.

The second group, comprising of just Jalen Hurts, Sam Darnold, Baker Mayfield and Jayden Daniels, Cowherd wouldn't be offended at the ask, but he'd negotiate.

Then comes the third group, "where if you ask for it, I'm hanging up the phone. Brock Purdy's in that one."

Cowherd continued, comparing paying Brock Purdy $50 million annually to purchasing a car.

"It's like negotiating for a new car. You can tell me that Civic's worth $100 grand. 'Well, we got rust-proofing, a sunroof.' … I'm walking out of the dealership if you think that Civic is worth $100,000."

Purdy, of course, has had an incredible start to his career, especially considering his draft position. As a starter, he's 23-13 in the regular season. In his 40 game career, he's thrown 64 touchdowns to 27 interceptions. He found himself in the Pro Bowl last season after leading the NFL in touchdown percentage (7.0%), yards per pass attempt (9.6), passer rating (113.0) and QBR (72.8%).

Purdy's numbers, like most of the injury-riddled 49ers, are down across the board. He's still having a solid season, with 3,864 yards, 20 touchdowns, and a 67.8 QBR in 15 games.

Purdy has also notably had massive playoff success, leading the 49ers to the NFC championship as a rookie (and looked great, going four-for-four in the passing game before getting hurt). Purdy followed that up with a Super Bowl appearance last season.

Throughout his six playoff games, Purdy has a six-to-one touchdown-to-interception ratio, and has thrown for 250 or more yards in four of his six games. (the one game he was healthy and failed to reach that mark, he went 19-for-29 for 214 yards and didn't turn the ball over).

"Nobody's picking on Brock Purdy," the host concluded. "There's only one thing that guarantees you can't win Super Bowls. Only one thing. Paying a B quarterback A+ money. ... I'm not like old guy yelling at clouds here. … Paying him 50-large and paying it early? I'm not doing it."
