First off, this is no Brock Purdy slander. I’ve appreciated his stunning and unexpected growth as much as anyone and freely admit to have written him off as a prospect coming out of Iowa State. But let’s be honest with ourselves: CMC is as much the engine of this offense as anyone else in Kyle Shanahan’s share-the-wealth system.
McCaffrey was last year’s Offensive Player of the Year and third in the MVP voting. For a spell last season, he might have been the MVP favorite — as a running back! In 2023! I don’t know if he’ll ever win the league MVP award, as quarterbacks have had a hammerlock on that award for decades now. But if there’s any non-QB who deserves it, CMC might be the guy. That makes him a bit stronger of a candidate for the 49ers than Purdy, who is the ultimate distributor. anglehold on the MVP race.
If you’re talking about the best 49ers player, whether it’s league-wide, conference-wide, or just division, McCaffrey seems like the safest pick. Sure Nick Bosa, Brock Purdy, or Deebo Samuel could enter the conversation, but as I said above, the offense runs through McCaffrey. We’ve seen the offense take a step back without those other names, but we didn’t see transform like it did when McCaffrey took over.
He’d be my pick as the 49ers MVP. Yes, even over Brock Purdy who I have been beating my fist on the table over saying he has made players around him better since many still think he’s a system guy.
Then again, this seems to be a bandwagon thing. Everyone is gushing about Christian McCaffrey and not even considering alternatives. Does it seem that way to you? I mean, the Brock Purdy bandwagon was strong last year.
Are you just sold on Christian McCaffrey as the 49ers’ MVP or do you think someone else gets it? Or do we just not worry about any of this and pray the Madden Curse is a myth?
