In their ranking of NFL linebacker units, Pro Football Focus ranked the Jets’ unit No. 1 in the league. They placed above the San Francisco 49ers, Chicago Bears, and the division rival New England Patriots, who rounded out the top four.

The article’s writer, Gordon McGuinness, spoke about the unit.

“The Jets rostered two of the ten highest-graded linebackers in the NFL last season. C.J. Mosley and Quincy Williams were at their best in coverage, where they ranked first and second in PFF grade at the position, respectively,” said McGuinness.

The ranking is very deserved for the team’s linebacker core of Mosley and Williams. Mosley has been a steady presence for the Jets in defending the run and the pass. He had one of his best seasons in coverage in 2023, having a 90.6 PFF coverage grade, an interception, and five pass deflections.

Williams burst onto the scene in 2023 and made a significant impact for the Jets. Whether as a blitzer, run defender, or dropping into coverage, the fifth-year linebacker thrived and helped take the team’s defense to the next level. Williams led all NFL defenders with 80 defensive stops.

The linebacker unit is not the only top-ranked group for the Jets, as PFF listed their defensive line as the best in the league.

It is no surprise that the Jets’ defense is viewed so highly. They have stars and depth at nearly every position. Despite the offense’s severe struggles, the unit has single-handedly won games for the Jets over the past two years.

With a better offense in 2024, the Jets’ linebackers and the rest of the defense are ready to soar to new heights and solidify their standing as the best in the league.
