It's only training camp but DeVonta Smith's injury update is becoming a thing

Well, this might end up being something. Or nothing, but the unknown status of Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeVonta Smith's return is a bit of a concern.

It's only training camp but DeVonta Smith's injury update is becoming a thing

On Tuesday, it was announced that Smith would not practice for the second straight day due to back tightness. Defenders Zack Baun (back contusion) and Nolan Smith (concussion) would also not be practicing for the Eagles at training camp.

Is this DeVonta Smith injury becoming a thing or an overreaction?

We live in a world where we need to react in the moment to what is happening around us. Smith not practicing for two straight days isn't the end of the world, but at least something worth monitoring throughout the second week of training camp.

The Eagles' offense has already seen its fair share of struggles with the passing game, as quarterback Jalen Hurts has been taking some heat for his struggles. Philly could use everyone in the offense right now on the field.

Smith has put together quite a career in Philadelphia, as last year he had a career-low 833 yards but a career-high and team-high eight touchdowns. He has stacked together two 1,000-yard seasons in his four years in the midnight green uniform. Smith did miss four games last year with three because of injury and one for the starters resting in the final week of the regular season.

He's expected to be the number two receiver once again in 2025 with A.J. Brown as the top pass catcher. Smith is a pivotal piece to the passing game, as outside of him and Brown, the only other reliable pass catcher is Dallas Goedert. The wide receiver position is short on consistency.

It's only been a week of training camp, so there's no reason to believe Smith won't be back, but the missing reps are the only concern with a new play caller and the offense hitting some tough days. The Eagles hope to have Smith back sometime this week.
