J.J. Watt Calls Out Jerry Jones Over Micah Parsons, Dak Prescott Comments

As the NFL world prepares for training camps to open around the country, one thing remains constant, Jerry Jones' willingness to say what he's thinking. The 82-year-old, Dallas Cowboys owner, made an unforgettable appearance in Oxnard, Calif., just one day ahead of the official start to Cowboys' training camp.

Jones, who remains active as the acting general manager of the Cowboys, despite his son, Stephen Jones' presence with the team, made many pointed, controversial comments about his best players on Monday.

Jones spoke to reporters about the uncertainty of signing players to long-term contracts in the NFL. He chose to cite two specific examples in All-Pro linebacker, Micah Parsons, and All-Pro quarterback, Dak Prescott while attempting to make his point.

“Just because we sign him doesn’t mean we’re gonna have him; he was hurt six games last year, seriously. I remember signing a player for the highest paid at the position in the league, and he got knocked out two-thirds of the year, Dak Prescott. So, there's a lot of things to think about when you’re thinking about committing and guaranteeing money,” Jones said.

J.J. Watt, one of the best defensive ends to ever do it, sent a message on his official X account, calling out Jones for his critical comments.

"Anytime you can publicly take a dig at your star quarterback and your star pass rusher simultaneously, right before the season begins, you just gotta take it… Nothing makes guys want to fight for you more than hearing how upset you are that they got hurt while fighting for you," Watt posted while retweeting the video of Jones' critical comments.

Parsons, who has previously said he'll be on the practice field during Cowboys training camp, retweeted Watt's tweet on X.

For the record, Parsons only missed four games last season, while Jones claimed he missed six. Also, despite Prescott missing time due to a fractured and dislocated ankle in 2020, Jones extended his QB's contract (in 2024) through the 2028-29 NFL season.

It appears Jones is just trying to gain leverage, publicly, in his private contract negotiations with Parsons by pointing out the uncertainty of a player's health.

Parsons has been one of the most productive linebackers in the NFL since being draft No. 12 overall in the 2021 NFL draft by the Cowboys. He has double-digit sacks in every season and is reportedly seeking to become the highest paid defensive player in the league.
