Jakob Chychrun is one of the biggest characters in the NHL, and a day after signing a long-term contract extension with the Capitals, the defenseman talked about his new deal on 106.7 The Fan’s Grant & Danny.
“It’s definitely been a very exciting and happy last few days for myself and my family,” Chychrun said of putting pen to paper.
Not only did Chychrun address his future in DC, but he also revealed another big change in his personal life. The Capitals defenseman is no longer a Tesla owner, but not for the reason you might think.
“We actually bought a new car a few weeks ago,” Chychrun said. “We had a Tesla for a while that we’ve wanted to get rid of. We’re pretty big — as you guys know, we talk about our health and wellness a lot — we just had a weird feeling about sitting on a battery all day in the car, so we wanted to get rid of the Tesla, move on from the electric. And I got my my wife her dream car which was a G-Wagon.”
The 2025 version of the SUV, made by Mercedes-Benz, has a starting sticker price of about $150,000, but it should fit within Chychrun’s budget. After coming to the Capitals this summer via trade, Chychrun has put up 44 points (18g, 26a) in 66 games and inked an eight-year, $72 million contract on Tuesday to stick around in Washington for the foreseeable future.
Chychrun dumping his Tesla comes as the electric car-maker’s brand has become unpopular across the country and in Europe. Tesla’s stock price has been cut nearly in half since Elon Musk joined the Trump administration in January as the leader of the Department of Government Efficiency. While physically being too close to the battery bothers Chychrun, others across the country are giving up their Teslas because they feel too close to Musk.
Further explaining his decision to swap rides, Chychrun noted that “my wife and I are just big into living a clean, healthy life.” He added, “We try to do a good job of not overspending. We’re just pretty simple and and homey people, and we don’t like to go crazy with our spending. We definitely have our months, but we try to do a good job.”
Chychrun buys local from farmers and owns chickens. He has previously spoken about his self-titled “ancestral” diet, which includes consuming things like raw milk, raw liver, and raw beef heart.
During the chat, Chychrun also addressed Dylan Strome’s comments that he didn’t use light bulbs in his house and ops for bees wax candles, which subsequently turned the reardguard into “a walking meme” online.
“We like to turn the lights off in the house and do no artificial light and just light some candles,” Chychrun said. “It’s been really nice — sleeping like a baby when I do that.”
As for Strome, “he completely sewered me, so now I’m dealing with that.”
