Jalen Ramsey and the Miami Dolphins are set for a divorce, and the New Orleans Saints are a logical destination. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported Ramsey and the Dolphins are "mutually set to explore trade options."
The word mutually is where the Saints come into play. Miami is giving Ramsey the option to search for his own landing spot. At 30 years old, the cornerback will likely prefer somewhere he feels familiar with the system, so he can quickly produce.
First-year Saints defensive coordinator, Brandon Staley, coached Ramsey with the Los Angeles Rams during their 2021 Super Bowl season. In that season, Ramsey was a first-team All Pro. Not only would a trade to New Orleans give Ramsey familiarity, it would give him familiarity in a system he was highly productive.
Since that season, Ramsey has been a vocal supporter of Staley. He's called him the best defensive coordinator in the league and, most recently, praised the Saints decision to hire Staley. It would be far from a stretch to say Ramsey would be interested in a reunion.
Cornerback is one of the most glaring holes the Saints have entering the draft. The signing of Isaac Yiadom gives you a potential starter, but trading for Ramsey solidifies your secondary. With the Rams, Ramsey often played the STAR role that Alontae Taylor is expected to play. It would be interesting to see how the players split time playing inside.
If there's one reservation, it's probably the finances. He's due over $25 million in 2025. If New Orleans can make it make sense financially, the trade certainly works schematically.
Ramsey was last traded for a third round pick and tight end Hunter Long. That was two years ago, and at 30-years old, it should take even less to get Ramsey in the building. The Saints have two fourth round picks. Using one of them to trade for a former All-Pro cornerback would give great value and make room for more flexibility in the first two rounds.
