Jared Goff owns the NFL record for pass attempts without an incompletion in a single game, but he can take it a step further on Sunday.
Jared Goff says he has had better games in his career, but there's no denying how good he was in Week 4 against the Seattle Seahawks. His 18 completions on as many attempts set the NFL record for pass attempts without an incompletion in a single game, but thanks to the random formula that's use for the statistic he did not register a perfect passer rating for his perfect passing performance.
Overlapping the 2022 and 2023 seasons, Goff has a top-five streak in league history for pass attempts without an interception (383). As with the run of completions against Seattle, good fortune plays into that equation along with playing well and avoiding mistakes.
Goff completed his last pass in Week 3 against the Arizona Cardinals, so he's got a streak of 19 straight pass attempts without an incompletion. Which begs a question.
How close is Jared Goff to the NFL record for consecutive completions?
As could be expected, Goff has the second-longest streak of consecutive completions in league history at 19.
The record, 25 straight completions, is held by four guys-Nick Foles, Philip Rivers, Marcus Mariota and Ryan Tannehill. Goff's current 19 straight is close as anyone has gotten to the record since 2018.
So if Goff completes his first six passes on Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys, he'll tie the record for consecutive completions. If he completes his first seven, he'll own the record on his own.
At times, the Lions to manipulated play calls to help players reach milestones or contract incentives (see Week 18 of the 2023 season with Josh Reynolds). When the topic of Goff's completion streak came up on Thursday, offensive coordinator Ben Johnson dismissed any idea a concerted effort to get the record would be made.
"Not even on my thought process, no,” Johnson said. “We’re playing ball.”
Reaching or resetting the overall record for consecutive completions would be awesome, but there's something about a "perfect game" that it won't quite be able to match. The record Goff set against the Seahawks was unique, which is why the Pro Football Hall of Fame now has his jersey from the game.
