The Kansas City Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes are the ninth team in line for a shot at the never-to-been-done-before three-peat and former NFL player Jason McCourty has shared his verdict on the ‘G.O.A.T’ debate.
In combination with key stakeholders Travis Kelce, Chris Jones, Andy Reid, and Steve Spagnuolo, Patrick Mahomes has reigned supreme since his starting season in 2018.
The Kansas City Chiefs are the next in line for a chance to three-peat and people have debated where this will place Mahomes with Tom Brady.
Patrick Mahomes is looking to catch Brady’s ring record but has faced shortcomings in the playoffs
Tom Brady sits at the head of the NFL QB table but Patrick Mahomes sits beside him with three rings, three finals MVPs, and two regular season MVPs.
Moreover, this was a combination that Brady had not managed to achieve until he was 37 years old.
Suppose Mahomes can become the first ever signal-caller to navigate his team to the unchartered three-peat, something even the great Brady never managed with his New England Patriots dynasty, would this see him surpass the legend?
However, Brady has the edge over Mahomes, defeating the Chiefs QB in his first-ever AFC Championship clash in overtime.
Furthermore, he denied the 28-year-old his second Vince Lombardi Trophy with a dominant victory at Super Bowl LV.
Robert Griffin III has reached his ‘G.O.A.T’ verdict but Jason McCourty’s conclusion differs
Former Heisman Trophy winner and NFL QB Robert Griffin III has concluded that Mahomes will leapfrog Brady if he can three-peat.
He asked former teammate of Brady, Jason McCourty, for his opinion on the topic.
“Brady has seven Super Bowls, so we’re at least putting the mark for Mahomes that he must at least get seven. The fact Brady beat him in a Super Bowl you have to hold that against him as well,” McCourty said via RGIII and the Ones podcast.
“If they go three-peat… and he’s the only quarterback to win three in a row, I think that changes the conversation. If he wins three in a row and doesn’t get to seven, say he gets to six, five, but three happen in a row, I think you can still have that conversation of if he’s the greatest of all time.
“The only thing is, Brady beat him.”
This defeat to Brady is something Mahomes will never be able to redress, frustratingly for the Chiefs quarterback.
McCourty suggests that three-peating will lower the ring requirement of seven for Patrick Mahomes
McCourty believes that a three-peat would not conclusively put Mahomes above the retired Brady, unlike RGIII.
Furthermore, the former cornerback suggests that Mahomes would not have to match Brady’s ring record of seven, and could earn five to secure the bragging rights in the ‘G.O.A.T’ debate.
Firstly, the Chiefs will have to secure the three-peat before the benchmark of rings required can be set for Mahomes.
The franchise has made successful moves in the offseason to add more talent on offense for Mahomes, with Marquise Brown and Xavier Worthy adding a new dynamic.
Tom Brady believes that there is a reason why the illustrious feat has never been reached.
