No, Dallas isn't suddenly dumping "Blow It Up.'' And no, Dallas isn't contemplating using some of its $22 million in present cap room - very much planned to be carried over into 2025 - to shoot its wad at a Davante Adams-level move. But the Cowboys just revealed a "new'' plan to be a "seller'' at the NFL trade deadline.
FRISCO - The Dallas Cowboys have frequently made it obvious that they do not intend to be "buyers'' at the coming trade deadline, as that would violate their desire to "keep our powder dry'' for a "Blow It Up/Remodel'' in 2025.
And so, as a result, the Nov. 5 NFL trade deadline is one that Dallas, bothersome as this might be to many frustrated fans, plans to sit out.
And to repeat: This isn't isn't just an opinion, or just the result of our viewpoint or our reporting dating back to February, when we first illustrated how Dallas would likely avoiding signing long-term deals to anyone but their own foundational stars. That position has been suggested by COO Stephen Jones has suggested it, and hinted at by coach Mike McCarthy.
And last week, Jerry was broadcasting his intended inactivity with a bullhorn.
Said Diana Russini of The Athletic: "He (said) that Dallas won’t be making roster moves before the NFL trade deadline in November.''
So that's that. The Cowboys are 3-3, bogged down with a sort of "out-of-it'' feel that belies the truth of the NFL standings, where opportunity remains.
But now comes a "Jerry leak,'' an almost off-the-cuff reference to an alteration in the plan.
No, Dallas isn't suddenly dumping "Blow It Up.'' And no, Dallas isn't contemplating using some of its $22 million in present cap room - very much planned to be carried over into 2025 - to shoot its wad at a Davante Adams-level move.
No, no. Listen closely to Jones (via 105.3 The Fan) and hear him almost whisper the exact opposite.
"If you see us moving in anyway by chance during this trade deadline, trading somebody, that would be because we are going in a different direction with defense/offense, we are going in different directions than we did with (former defensive coordinator Dan) Quinn and so the same skill, the same player might not work as well in what we want to do with (present coordinator Mike) Zimmer."
And so ... Dallas is thinking about being a "seller'' and doing so specifically, it seems, with what can essentially be termed "a defensive player who doesn't fit.'' Oh, and Dallas would rather have a 2025 draft pick than said player. Meaning, maybe ... "Blow It Up'' even sooner than next March.
