The Tennessee Titans have been abysmal in 2024, as the team is 1-5 and has little hope for the rest of the season. Many are to blame for Tennessee's underwhelming showing through six games, but the offense has been the main culprit.
The Titans' offense has been atrocious in 2024, as the unit has been decimated by incompetent quarterback play and subpar coaching. Tennessee ranks dead last in passing yards per game (145.8) and bottom-10 in points per game (17.7).
Though Brian Callahan and Nick Holz's offense have been horrid, Dennard Wilson's defense has been one of the better units in the league.
Outside of surrendering two 30-point games to the Green Bay Packers and Buffalo Bills, the defense has been formidable and ranks in the top 10 for passing and rushing yards allowed per game.
With the Titans' season dead in the water, general manager Ran Carthon could look to move some of his veteran pieces with trade value at the Nov. 5 trade deadline. One of those players could be defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons, who has anchored Tennessee's defensive line over the last few seasons.
If Tennessee decides to deal their star defensive lineman, Pro Football Focus' Bradley Locker believes the New York Jets could be interested in Simmons' services.
At 1-5, the Titans’ first year under Brian Callahan hasn’t gone anywhere close to plan. Although the offense has a myriad of questions, the defense has been solid, ranking ninth in EPA per play. Simmons has long been a cornerstone, but maybe Tennessee would cut ties in an effort to rebuild.
The Jets have already made their intentions clear: do whatever it takes to win in 2024. The team’s defense has remained stout, but the defensive line has actually been one of the worst in the NFL. Quinnen Williams is Gang Green’s highest-graded interior defender at only a 66.6 overall mark — a far cry from his last few years — and Javon Kinlaw hasn’t performed well.
Pursuing an edge rusher could also be in play for Woody Johnson, but Simmons would quietly be a shrewd add to a team pushing all its assets on the table.
Though it is extremely unlikely the Titans trade Simmons, it isn't completely out of the question.
The team needs to obtain more future draft capital, and the former Mississippi State standout is one of the only players on the roster with substantial value.
The Jets just made a blockbuster trade last week, acquiring wide receiver Davante Adams from the Las Vegas Raiders for a conditional third-round pick. The team still has their first-round pick in next year's draft and also an extra third, which could be used in a potential deal for Simmons.
However, with the Jets sitting at 2-5, it would be foolish for them to make another trade, and especially one that would require such a big offer. Though Simmons and Quinnen Williams would be an electric interior defensive line duo, New York must plan for the future and start building through the draft.
This offseason will be eventful for the franchise, as Aaron Rodgers' future is uncertain, a head coaching search will commence, and the roster still has a bunch of glaring weaknesses.
