Jets finally approaching full health in defensive secondary with bye looming

The New York Jets were missing their top three safeties at one point, but they're on the way to regaining full health at the position.

After missing the last four games, starter Chuck Clark returned to practice this week as the Jets opened his 21-day activation window. Clark is currently on Injured Reserve due to an ankle issue.

"Full participants will be Aaron Rodgers and Chuck Clark. Chuck Clark with his window opening today to potential come off IR," said interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich on Wednesday in Florham Park.

The 29-year-old Clark has practiced fully two days in a row. Although he may not be ready to go on Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts, his return to game action seems close.

Clark, who missed the entire 2023 season due to an ACL tear, started the first six games of the season as the replacement for Jordan Whitehead, who walked in free agency. He made at least four tackles in every appearance as a Jet thus far.

At one point, Gang Green was down to converted cornerbacks Jalen Mills and Isaiah Oliver as the two on-field safeties. After being unavailable in Weeks 8 and 9, starting free safety Tony Adams and primary backup Ashtyn Davis both returned to the lineup in Week 10 against the Arizona Cardinals.

While Adams (hamstring) and Davis (concussion) are finally off the injury report, starting slot cornerback Michael Carter II and second-stringer Brandin Echols are both nursing injuries. Carter was limited due to his back for the second day in a row. Echols, who is in concussion protocol, was upgraded from a non-participant to limited on Thursday.

Following the November 17 home game against the Colts, the Jets will have their bye in Week 12. New York is trending toward all defensive backs being available by Week 13 at the latest.
